How To Write Great E-Newsletter Subject Lines
You’ve taken a lot of time to put the right content together for your e-newsletter.
But did you take the time to write the perfect email subject line? You should.
If done right, the words in your subject line can be a huge help when it comes to the success of your email marketing and cut through the inbox clutter.
A survey by Constant Contact asking consumers what impacted their decision to open marketing emails found 47 percent said they make their decision based on the content in the subject line.
In general, keep your email subject lines short, descriptive and provide your readers with reasons to explore your messages further. Using splashy or cheesy phrases to try to stand out often results in your email being ignored.
Here are a few ideas on approaching the ever-important subject line.
Ask a question.
Asking a question in your subject line can get the attention of the people viewing your email and entice them to learn more.
For example, ask questions that point out a common problem:
Struggling to find the perfect gift for Mother’s Day?
Seek a command.
It pays off to be direct with your audience to get them to act now.
So if you want people to take advantage of an offer, a good subject line could be:
Don’t wait. Save 10% this week at our store.
Or register for an event:
Reserve your spot for our annual anti-drug vigil.
Create a list.
Lists make it easier for people to consume information and demonstrate your points in a more compelling and creative way.
For events, provide a list of reasons to attend:
5 reasons to attend our networking luncheon.
Or even for educational content:
10 holiday time-saving tips from (your organization).
These days, people are flooded with spam and increasingly pressed for time. Vague teasers, constant reminders, and pleas for donations are not going to draw attention.
So think through what you want your readers to do. Be cleaver. Give people a call to action. Stand out by selling less.
